A tummy tuck, also known as abdominoplasty, is a cosmetic surgical procedure designed to remove excess skin and fat from the abdominal area and tighten weakened or separated abdominal muscles. This results in a flatter, firmer, and more toned midsection. Often chosen by individuals who have experienced significant weight loss or post-pregnancy changes, a tummy tuck can restore both appearance and confidence.
There are different variations of the procedure, including the mini tummy tuck, extended tummy tuck, and reverse tummy tuck, each tailored to specific body types and goals. Whether you’re considering a plus size tummy tuck, a tummy tuck after C-section, or want to enhance your contour with an hourglass tummy tuck, the procedure is fully customizable.
Tummy tuck surgery involves the removal of loose skin, tightening of abdominal muscles, and often repositioning of the belly button. It is typically performed under general anesthesia and can take between 2 to 4 hours. The extent of the surgery depends on factors like the amount of excess skin, fat distribution, and the technique used.
The procedure can significantly improve body shape and posture. However, like any tummy tuck operation, it’s essential to have realistic expectations about tummy tuck results, especially regarding tummy tuck scars, which are usually placed low enough to be hidden by underwear or swimwear.
The surgery begins with incisions made along the lower abdomen, typically just above the pubic area. For a mini tummy tuck, the incision is smaller and ideal for those with mild lower-abdominal skin laxity. In a full tummy tuck, the abdominal muscles are tightened, and excess fat and skin are removed. The belly button is usually repositioned.
Depending on your needs, liposuction may also be combined with the tummy tuck to enhance contouring. Some patients may opt for an extended tummy tuck or reverse tummy tuck based on their anatomy and aesthetic goals.
For this purpose we offer the gentle liposuction with laser technology via thin cannulas, which liquefy and suck off the abdominal fat. The procedure can be used as an individual therapy or in combination with a full abdominoplasty or mini abdominoplasty. Please discuss the details with the beauty experts.
Following surgery, a compression garment or tummy tuck belt is typically worn to reduce swelling and support the area during healing. Small drains may be placed temporarily to prevent fluid buildup. Bruising, swelling, and discomfort are expected, especially during the first week often referred to as one of the worst days after tummy tuck.
The incision heals gradually, and while tummy tuck scars are permanent, they generally fade significantly over time. Full healing after tummy tuck may take several weeks, and your surgeon will provide specific aftercare instructions. Immediately after the operation, swelling often occurs, but disappears within a few days of the operation without any major development of pain. Wound healing disorders described in the specialist literature, on the other hand, are rather rare and only occur if the operation is performed improperly.
Unlike an abdominoplasty using liposuction, after which you can leave the clinic immediately, an abdominoplasty requires a hospital stay of 1 to 2 days. The absence of sports activities for several weeks after the procedure is conducive to complication-free wound healing and smoothing.
If you wear the specially adapted compression underwear over the recommended period without any gaps, the skin and the underlying tissue will grow together evenly as a rule. While minimally invasive liposuction for abdominoplasty hardly leaves any scars, surgical abdominoplasty can leave inconspicuous scars at the interfaces.
Tummy tuck recovery time varies from person to person, but most patients return to light activities within 2 weeks. Strenuous activity and heavy lifting should be avoided for at least 4–6 weeks. Wearing a tummy tuck belt consistently and following your surgeon’s post-op advice will support a smooth recovery. You’ll also go through different tummy tuck belly button healing stages, especially if your navel was repositioned.
